About Mage of Metals

Mage [ meyj ] noun; a magician/enchanter/sorcerer, someone who uses or practices magic.

Hi! My name is Emily and I am the artist and sorceress behind Mage of Metals. For as long as I can remember I’ve always had a strong desire to create. I furthered my passion when I graduated in 2016 from Tyler School of Art with a BFA in jewelry design. After graduation, I began working as a bench jeweler at the historic Jeweler’s Row in Philadelphia.

For years I would create my own jewelry pieces but it wasn’t until October 2019 that I decided to put myself out there and pursue my dream at full force. Since the beginning of my jewelry career, I found I enjoyed creating jewelry that is centered around symbolism and stories from fantasy, history, literature and mythology.

The reason I like to combine jewelry with storytelling is they both have the capability of connecting us like a web to the past, present and future. The art of jewelry making has been around for thousands of years and I feel deeply connected to it. I want to honor this ancient trade by creating meaningful, intentional and lasting pieces that resonate with my viewer and their personal journey.

At the end of the day, I want to make you feel special when you wear my work. To me, jewelry is more than just an accessory, it’s also an art form that can be used to express yourself and how magical you truly are.

How the jewelry is made

Each jewelry piece is made by hand in my home studio. I utilize many facets of traditional metalsmith techniques and enjoy both metal fabrication and casting.

Cast jewelry was perfected by the Ancient Egyptians in 1400 BCE and is better known today as lost wax casting. This is my favorite process. For each piece, I hand-carve a square block of wax. After I carve the piece, the wax is melted away in a furnace and molten metal fills it’s place. For behind the scenes carving, see below.

I get my waxes cast locally by a family-owned casting company and I source all my supplies from American manufacturers, small businesses and local jewelry suppliers. I also choose to make small-batch and made-to-order jewelry because this reduces production waste, which is something I’m very passionate about.
